Double-hung window installation and replacement for Lynchburg homes old and new
Call (434) 337-3185 NowWalk down almost any street in Lynchburg and most of the windows you see are double-hung: two sashes stacked in one frame, each one able to slide up or down. The style fits the brick colonials of Peakland, the Victorian houses along Rivermont Avenue and the ranch homes in Timberlake equally well, which is why it remains the most requested window we install.
On a single-hung window only the bottom sash moves. It costs a bit less and has one fewer place for air to slip through, but you give up the top-down airflow. Many owners use single-hung on the first floor and double-hung upstairs, where venting heat matters most during Lynchburg's humid summers.
Every opening is measured individually, because older houses rarely have two that are exactly the same. We check the sill for rot, look at how the old sash weights were set up and plan to insulate the empty weight pockets once the old system is removed. That step alone stops a surprising amount of air leakage around the frame.
Insulated glass with a low-E coating is standard, with options for argon fill and obscure glass in bathrooms. Frames come in vinyl, wood, clad wood and fiberglass. For most budgets, our vinyl windows are the starting point.
Measure every opening and check sills for rot
Choose frame, glass and grille pattern
Remove old sash, insulate weight pockets and set new units
Trim, caulk and test every sash
Usually, yes. Insert replacements fit inside the existing frame when it is sound, which saves the interior trim and exterior brick.
They are removed, and the empty pockets are filled with insulation so cold and hot air cannot move through them.
Vinyl and clad frames do not. Interior wood surfaces can be stained or painted to match the room.
